Liisa Laakso

Liisa Laakso is a senior researcher with the Nordic Africa Institute. Before joining the Nordic Africa Institute she served as the rector of the University of Tampere and before that as the dean at the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Social Science. Laakso has acted in different national and international positions of trust, including the Finnish government’s Research and Innovation Council and she currently is a member of the Human Rights Committee of the Council of Finnish Academies.

We’re Seeing a Link Between Academic Freedom and Democracy in Africa

There’s a strong correlation between academic freedom and other elements of democracy. But cause and effect are not so clear. The African experience makes the relationship clearer because simultaneously, and in a relatively short time, the whole continent moved from one-party to multiparty systems.
