Campaign for Social Science reaches £50,000 milestone

June 1, 2011 1565

The newly-created Campaign for Social Science has just reached its first fundraising milestone of £50,000.  This is a significant step towards the Campaign’s target of raising £300,000 over the next five years.

The Campaign, launched in January 2011 at the House of Lords, was established to address concerns about the lack of  awareness amongst politicians and the wider public of the crucial role that social science plays within society. A priority is to create a popular vision of social science, show what it can achieve and the difference it makes, raise awareness of the importance of social science research and promote the value of social science education in the UK.

“The work of academic social science in the UK is among the very best in the world,” says Michael Harloe, board member of the Campaign and former Vice Chancellor of the University of the Salford.  “Our challenge is to ensure people outside of academia know this. We have to ensure that social science is better identified, understood and valued, so that it gets the funding resources it needs to sustain its world class position.”

The Campaign welcomes donations from individuals as well as organisations.  The money raised will be used to promote the usefulness of social science to society. If you would like to donate, please visit the Campaign website and click on the ‘donate’ button.

The Academy of Social Science’s mission is to promote social sciences in the United Kingdom for the public benefit. The academy is composed of individual academicians and learned societies; it responds to government and other consultations on behalf of the social science community, organizes meetings about social science and seminars on topics that span social science disciplines, and sponsors a number of efforts that promote social science and enhance its value to society.
