‘Standards matter in higher education, not just participation rates’

An anonymous university lecturer calls for higher education not only to be free but also to be genuinely higher education. The writer contends that policy-makers should not lose sight of the intellectual goals of higher education, and criticises the quality of secondary schooling that most students receive.
