Census and Society : Census & Society: why everyone counts

The British census is due to take place on the 27th march 2011. The British Library has just opened a fascinating new temporary exhibition on its history. The physical exhibition contains historic census materials alongside contemporary artefacts (photographs, maps, cartoons) which show reactions to the census and the changing nature of social life ((families and households, health, employment and migration) in Britain For those who cannot attend the exhibition (7 march-29th may 2011) the website itself offers an interesting introduction. I would recommend the video from Ian cooke , Social Science Curator which explains the background to the exhibition and its preparation and gives a glimpse of some of the materials. More examples of documents (returns, posters and ephemera) can be downloaded from the website. Look on the right handside of the page. They include: an 1861 joke from Punch about women’s ages and census lies!
