Deputy Takes Over at Board for Science Education

Heidi Schweingruber, the deputy director of the Board on Science Education (BOSE) at the National Research Council of the National Academies, has been named to head the board.
She succeeds Martin Storksdieck, who left the National Research Council this month to become director of the Center for Research on Lifelong STEM Learning at Oregon State University. He will join that faculty as a professor in the School of Education.

Schweingruber has been BOSE’s deputy director since 2008 and served as study director for many projects such as the NRC report A Framework for K-12 Science Education (2011) which was the first step in developing new standards. She is also the co-author of two award-winning books for practitioners that translate findings of NRC reports for a broader audience: Ready, Set, Science! (2008) and Surrounded by Science (2010).

Prior to coming to the National Research Council in 2004, Schweingruber worked as a senior research associate at the Institute of Education Sciences in the U.S. Department of Education. She holds a Ph.D. in developmental psychology and anthropology, and a certificate in culture and cognition from the University of Michigan.
