Gabe Miller Leaving CFHSS for Universities Canada

January 18, 2024 2268

Gabriel Miller, currently the president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, has been named the president and chief executive officer of Universities Canada effective March 18. His appointment by Universities Canada was announced on January 17 by its board of directors; the federation announced the same day that it had begun a search for a permanent CEO it hopes to have in place by June.

At Universities Canada, Miller succeeds Philip Landon, the membership organization’s interim president and CEO since July 1, 2023. Landon, who filled in once Paul Davidson left his 14 years in the role last year, will remain as the Universities Canada’s chief operating officer.

Universities Canada, which bills itself as “the voice of Canada’s universities,” advocates for the nation’s universities before government, industry, the public and global entities. It was formerly known as the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.

Welcoming Miller on board, Deep Saini, the organization’s board chair and president and vice-chancellor at McGill University, was quoted, “we are confident that his wealth of experience in not-for-profit leadership, strategic advocacy, and impactful coalition-building will usher in a new era of innovation and collaboration for the advancement of higher education in our nation.”

Miller joined the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences in 2017, having previously had a series of roles with the Canadian Cancer Society and serving as the government and media relations director of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
